Important Notice - Trail Closure

The quad/snowmobile trail from the Interlakes Corner to the dump, north of Wildman's Restaurant, is no longer available for public use. That portion of the trail crosses through private properties that have now been sold and are being developed.
In the past, we were given "temporary" permission by a local Real Estate developer to use the trail with the understanding that when the lots were sold, the trail would no longer be available for use.
We are asking riders, hikers, and any other form of trail user, to respect private property and the privacy of the owners who have purchased these properties for their personal use.
The next meeting of the Interlakes Snowmobile Club will be a Meet & Greet.
PLACE: Wildman's Family Restaurant
DATE: Wed. November 8th, 2017
TIME: Social- 6 pm; Meeting & dinner: 7 pm. Each person attending must pay for their dinner.
We invite anyone with an interest in identifying and developing an alternative route, to attend and share your thoughts.
In the past, the Interlakes Snowmobile Club has developed multi use trail systems in the area. These trail systems are registered with the Government and are pretty much permanent. An example is the trail running south from Judson Rd, over Bridge Creek to the dump, then west to Fawn Lake. The bridge over Bridge Creek was built by members of the Interlakes Snowmobile Club through volunteer hours with the materials and money donated by local businesses.
At this time, the Interlakes Snowmobile Club is not in a position to develop a trail from the Interlakes Corner north to the Fawn Lake trail, since we do not have sufficient membership numbers. The Club is healthy financially but lacks volunteer manpower. If we can get an additional 10 to 20 members with an interest in developing this trail and forming a committee, this can be done. Or, if there is another trail minded local group that would take on the development, the Club would be more than happy to be part of it.
The South Sheridan Lake trails were developed and registered by the Interlakes Snowmobile Club more than 15 years ago. The Club no longer maintains that trail system, but the trails remain, because they are registered.
Currently, the Interlakes Snowmobile Club has a Trail Management Agreement with Recreation Sites and Trails BC. This involves maintaining in part approximately 110 kms of the Barnett Perimeter Trail, north of Hwy 24 to Windy Mtn, west to Drewry Lake onto Doman Rd.
You can also leave comments at our Facebook page, www.facebook.com/ilsnowmobileclub or send an email to : ilsnowmobileclub@gmail.com .
Other reasons to join the Interlakes Snowmobile Club:
  • social aspect - meet new people
  • safer to ride in a group
  • organized rides and getaway riding weekends
  • ride in new areas
  • Snowmobile clubs are members of the BC Snowmobile Federation which is the voice for snowmobiling in British Columbia - important if we want to maintain our existing riding areas
  • liability insurance is not as expensive when you are a club member
  • liability insurance coverage when working on trails with the club
Hope to see you at Wildman's on November 8th.

In Memory

In Memory of Joe Maddalozzo
our fellow club member and friend
who will be sadly missed.

"Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there; I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow ..."
Excerpt from poem, Mary Elizabeth Frye 1932

So many good memories.

Club Compared to Wolf Pack

Think of this wolf pack as the Interlakes Snowmobile Club ...haha.

A wolf pack: the first 3 are the old or sick, they give the pace to the entire pack.
If it was the other way round, they would be left behind, losing contact with the pack.
In case of an ambush they would be sacrificed.
Then come 5 strong ones, the front line.
In the center are the rest of the pack members, then the 5 strongest following.
Last is alone, the alpha. He controls everything from the rear.
In that position he can see everything, decide the direction. He sees all of the pack.
The pack moves according to the elders pace and help each other, watch each other."

Social Committee Update

It's been another year of limited riding due to a lack of snow in the lower elevations, as well as logging activity in some of our favourite riding areas.

The Interlakes Snowmobile Club participated in Family Fun Night in 100 Mile House on Jan. 29th.
Marcel and Michelle sold maps and showed slides of various club rides.

The club had a free raffle for a helmet donated by Interlakes Snowmobile Club and Performance All Terrain. The lucky winner was Kathy Haverman of 100 Mile House.

One of the club's older chainsaws was raffled off and won by Roy Nichol of 108 Mile Ranch.
The proceeds of $70 was donated to the South Cariboo Health Foundation.

Last month, the 100 Mile Free Press did a story on the various snowmobile clubs in the area. They mistakenly stated that a membership in the Interlakes Snowmobile Club gave an automatic membership in the Green Lake Club. We are 2 separate clubs and membership in both clubs are separate.

Hopefully some club members will be able to get out riding in the higher elevations.

Avalanche Awareness

Marcel, Jan and Earl attended the avalanche awareness at 100 mile search and rescue this morning.   We watched a video, and then went over terrain, snow conditions, risk factors etc. which was really good.   We went over the Avalanche Canada website, learned some more about how to use it to our advantage, and how information is gathered and how to add information which we can learn when we are in an area.
Then we all went outside and did some exercises using our beacons, probes and shovels, which was just excellent.  It was a chance to check out several different brands of beacons, and what they can do.   We discussed how to ensure everyone's beacons are working properly prior to heading out on to the trail, doesn't take long to do, and is a very good idea especially when you are heading into mountainous terrain.
We three formed a team, Jan located with the beacon, Earl used the probe and then Marcel did the digging and we successfully located our "victim" which was buried under about a meter of snow.
If the club is interested in Shane and Val coming out, they will go through the program with us all, I found it extremely helpful, and they offered lots of details on how to approach a situation in which someone has been caught in an avalanche.
We now have an idea of how to ensure the area is safe to search, how to search efficiently and how effective our beacons are.  Time is always if the essence in these situations and the more proficient we become, the better our chances of a successful outcome.
We went over emergency gear to carry with us, and Jan got to pull the cord on the inflatable back pack which is intended to keep you on top of snow in the case of an avalanche.
The back country is a marvelous place to be, but as we know weather conditions can rapidly change and the risk of avalanche is out there.  The better educated and prepared we are, the safer we can we be.

Snow Conditions at Interlakes

We've been getting lots of emails from people coming up for the holidays and wondering whether to bring their sleds.
It snowed most of the day on Sun. Dec, 12th.  Also some new snow again this morning.
There's a good 5 inches of new snow on top of a frozen layer with at least another 5 inches of snow under that ice layer.
Snow is good in the higher elevations.
Are the trails good to ride?  Our club hasn't been on any trails yet.  Might still be sparse in the treed areas but hopefully more snow coming this week.  Logging roads will be good.
Lakes are NOT safe to go on yet.  Still open water on some area lakes.

About our Club

The Interlakes Snowmobile Club would like to welcome new members and to invite anyone interested in a good time in the winter to check out our facebook at www.facebook.com/ilsnowmobileclub
We are a group of sledders who get together for a good time.  We have a wide spectrum of ages from 20 years to 78 years. We have many trails which often lead up into the mountains where we have vast areas to play in. We usually have two rides per week - one on a weekend and one on a weekday and sometimes spontaneous rides depending on weather. The trails which are going to be used for a given ride are brushed out by our trail committee either ahead of or during the ride. Signage is often done by quad travel in the fall.
There are safety regulations which include; No alcohol on rides.  An   approved helmet must be worn.  No passing on trails when the group is moving. Changes in the line up are made during a stop time. When a destination is reached everyone goes their own way with an established spot where the sledders will regroup after play time.  All snowmobiles are required to have third party liability on their sleds before going on a club ride.  The motto is;   any member on a ride will get where the group is going. Everyone helps when we have a stuck rider. There are novice riders and very experienced riders.
There is more fun than just riding. We have several parties per year as well as a three day ride in Wells in late February, early March. Good accommodation and good meals. We will welcome anyone who is interested to drop in to our first meeting of the season. There will be an open dialog regarding where the meetings will be held for the season 2014/2015  Coffee will be served.
The first meeting of the season will be October 8 2014. At 7pm at 6196 Lone Butte Horse Lake Road

For directions call Jeanne at 250-395-3557

Trail Clearing

Some club members took advantage of the beautiful fall weather in October to do some improvements on our local trails.  They spent time signing the Sheridan Trail system, as well as clearing some sections of the trail to Windy Mountain.  I'm sure it will be a vast improvement since those willows were taking over one section of this trail.

The Prez working harder than a beaver!

Jim giving his brush cutter a work-out.

A big thank you to all the volunteers that work hard to make our trails safe and fun to ride :)
